Hello Saluki Green Action Team - SGATs!

Did you know: When food/organic waste is composted, instead of left to decompose in a landfill, it produces far less methane? Methane is a very powerful greenhouse gas that when released to the air, is about 30 times worse for the environment than carbon dioxide.

Take Action!: Composting exists on a large scale but it can also be done very effectively in communities and even in your own personal life. To learn more about the composting process, and how you can reduce methane production in landfills, attend the Compost Bin Workshop on Thursday, April 19, 2-5pm, Morris lawn.

This hands-on composting workshop is sponsored by SIU's environmental RSO S.E.N.S.E. (Students Embracing Nature, Sustainability and the Environment) and the Sustainability Office. Students can make a small outdoor cedar compost bin for their homes, learn about other styles of compost bins, and talk to experts. Materials are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis! The talk is open and free to the public, but you must be a student to take home a bin.

To find out more, check out our Earth Month Calendar. Also, if you want to further your eco work in the Carbondale community, go to the Saturday Spring Clean Up on Saturday, April 21, 9am, at Turley Park  hosted by Keep Carbondale Beautiful!  Information for this event can be found here:  http://www.keepcb.org/
