How We Keep SIU Green
Students changed the future of SIU in 2009 when they initiated the Green Fee, which equates to approximately $10 per semester, depending on total credit hours*. It was approved by 73% of students who voted in a campus-wide referendum. On May 7, 2009 the SIU Board of Trustees unanimously passed the fee, providing a regularized source of funding for on-campus sustainability projects.
- The Sustainability Council was formed to make campus-wide recommendations concerning sustainability and allocate Green Fee revenue. It is comprised of students, faculty, and staff.
- The Green Fund Grant Program is overseen by the Sustainability Council.
- The Office of Sustainability exists to help lead, facilitate, and coordinate sustainability programming and initiatives on campus and is funded by the Student Green Fee. We work to catalyze sustainable decision making on campus, with a goal of balancing environmental health, social equity, and economic prosperity. More information about our Mission, Vision, and Values can be found on our homepage. Details about our team can be found here. We have two locations, the Sustainability Hub and Sustainability Office, both found on the first floor of the Student Center.
*As of fall 2018, the Green Fee was consolidated into the General Student Fee.
