Our STARS score is climbing! 2013 Silver STARS: 48.36 2016 Silver STARS: 58.51 With YOUR help, we hope to reach Gold status in 2019!We received our first Bicycle Friendly University designation in 2016. Congratulations!!
We received our first Tree Campus USA designation in 2015 and repeated in 2016. On average, our 7000 trees could produce more than 1,820,000 pounds of oxygen annually!We have been recognized by the Princeton Review as a Green School five times!


Over 160 individuals have taken campus Green Tours since September 2016!Including Spring 2017, a total of 169 green fee funded projects have been awarded totaling over $2.1 million. (Funded by the Student Green Fee)


At SIU, 68 academic departments offer at least one sustainability course or a course that includes sustainability. There are a total of 216 sustainability-focused courses and 332 others that relate to sustainability for a total of 548 courses!A total of 138 SIU faculty/staff members from 31 academic departments are engaged in sustainability-related research.

Recycling & Waste

In 2016, Salukis diverted 634.28 tons of material from the solid waste landfill. That is the equivalent of 421 VS Beetles!SIU recycled 504.10 tons of materials in 2016. If these were all aluminum cans lined end-to-end, they would span from SIU to Seattle, Washington!Did you know the Sustainability Office offers an ink and toner sharing program? The program has saved the university more than $28,000 since data tracking began. In the last fiscal year alone, the program resulted in a savings of more than $15,700.
