Earth Month 2018 

Earth Day is April 22nd, but we are going to celebrate the entire month of April! Below is a complete list of Earth Month activities! These events are being organizied by departments, organizations, and groups both on and off campus. For more details or to be put in contact with the host organization you can call 618-453-2846.

 

Earth Month Calendar

 Announcement: The Compost Bin Workshop was rescheduled for next Wednesday, April 25 from 12pm -3pm on Morris Library front lawn.

Afterward, please join the Sutainability Collaborative at the forced aeration compost facility at 4:30pm for a tour. The GPS location is 3689 W. Pleasant Hill Rd. Come see how the magic happens!

Feed Your Neighbor 5k Fundraiser

Sponsored by the Neighborhood Food Co-op

Registration 4pm, Race at 6pm

Turley Park

The Neighborhood Co-op sponsors an annual "Feed Your Neighbor" 5k fundraiser. The course is certified and professionally timed. All monies raised will be donated to the Good Samaritan House of Carbondale. In addition, they are asking for participants and community members to donate non-perishable goods to be donated to the SIU Food Pantry. There will be music and great raffle prizes.

Green Dawgs Day

10-4pm

Touch of Nature

Green Dawgs Day is a FREE event from 10am – 4pm on Sunday, April 8 funded through the SIU Green Fund that welcomes students to Touch of Nature to be immersed in nature and learn about recreational and environmental opportunities on campus. Transportation will be provided for students leaving from the student center; Once on-site, students will be welcomed by sustainability and environmentally minded departments and organizations at SIU as well as the surrounding Southern Illinois community. This will give students the opportunity to network with professionals for internships and volunteer opportunities at SIU and across the region. In addition, Touch of Nature staff will be available throughout the entire program to facilitate various FREE activities for students such as canoeing, hiking, zip lining, rock climbing, and much more! Environmental Education will also be hosting a Project WILD training workshop!

WEEK 2:

Monday April 9

Plogging

Student Center, front entrance

4:45 – 6 pm

The Recreation Center and Sustainability are joining forces to promote personal fitness and planet health through a new fitness craze that started in Sweden, called “Plogging”. Think jogging and litter pick-up (“plocka upp” is Swedish for “pick up”).

If you are a runner, jogger, or even a dog walker, join us at 4:45pm on April 9 to stay fit and help our planet. Bags and a glove will be provided.

 

Tuesday April 10

We are all Here: Animal Appreciation

Morris Lawn

10-3pm

The SIU Housing and Sustainability Office Ecoreps are hosting the first “We are all here” event highlighting the many relationships between human and animals.  Learn more about he Saluki Service Dawg RSO and talk to representatives. The Zoology department will also bringing snails and discussing their role in the environment. Want to learn about wildlife rehabilitation? The director of Free Again will be on site to let you know about volunteer opportunities.

 

Wednesday April 11

Timber Stand Improvement Day

Meet at the Agriculture Building Breezeway

12-2pm

Join the Society of American Foresters for a timber improvement project in the woods surrounding Campus Lake. We will be removing invasive species, which is the first step to site restoration! Boots, long pants, sleeves and a water bottle are recommended. All tools and gloves will be provided. Meet at the breezeway at 12 pm and the group will walk to the designated spot.

Join the SIU Student Recreation Center and Touch of Nature Environmental Center for the 6th Annual Rocky Ledges 5K Trail Run. The event will be held on Saturday, April 14, 2018. This exciting race will be held on the beautiful grounds at Touch of Nature. Gather all your friends and sign up for the race!

Beautiful Southern Ride

Carbondale Middle School

Start 7-4 pm

Description:

This is a bicycle ride through Southern Illinois! Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Carbondale Breakfast, the Beautiful Southern Ride Bicycle is a fundraising event to benefit the philanthropies of the Rotary Club of Carbondale such as Carbondale Boys and Girls Club and also to support the ride. Bicycle riders have the choice between a 30 mile, a 62 mile, and a 75 mile ride. All rides start at the Carbondale Middle School. Registration is from 7-9 am and all races should plan to finish by 4pm. Register online, registration prices vary. http://www.beautifulsouthernride.com/

Bike Rodeo

The Boys and Girls Club of Carbondale and the Rotary Club of Carbondale Breakfast are hosting a Bike Rodeo on Saturday, April 14th from 10:00am-12:00pm at Carbondale Middle School.  At this event, kids and adults will bring their bikes and have the opportunity to register them with the Carbondale police department, try out a safety and obstacle course, have their bike repaired, check that their helmets are properly fitted, decorate their bikes, participate in a bike parade, etc.

Tree Planting

SIU has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a Tree Campus USA for three years in a row!  Assist in planting several native trees on campus. Please wear long pants and comfortable work shoes (boots preferred) that you don't mind getting dirty. Bring work gloves if you have them. No experience required - we'll teach you everything you need to know! Hours are eligible for the Environmental Ambassador Award. Sign up beforehand is encouraged. Email Katie.mcgrath@siu.edu

Farm to Fork Dinner

The 2018 Farm to Fork Dinner will take place on Wednesday, Apr. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in Grinnell Commons on the upper level. Participants will enjoy locally grown food prepared by two chefs from University Housing Culinary & Nutrition Services. We are proud to partner with the SIU Sustainability Office; SIU Department of Animal Science, Food & Nutrition; and SIU Fermentation Science Institute on this event. *** Tickets are on sale now and recommended to purchase in advance. Description:

Celebrate National Bicycle Day by having your bike tuned up for summer! The Student Center Craft Shop will be at the north entrance of the Student Center for repairs and to register your bicycle! This is a FREE event!

Join Food Works Thursday April 19th for an evening celebrating local food & foraging with James Beard semifinalist and author of Acorns & Cattails; A Modern Foraging Cookbook of Forest, Farm & Field Chef Rob Connoley. Connoley is a joy to hear as he describes adventures in foraged food recounted from decades of experience. He will share the history of acorns as food presenting three small plates, each paired with Scratch Beer. Doors open at 6 p.m.
The event is in the Snake Room at the acclaimed Scratch Brewery in Ava, IL at 264 Thompson Rd..
A silent auction will raise funds to support Food Works' programs.
Tickets are $25 for the public; $20 for Food Works members.

This hands-on composting workshop is sponsored by SIU's Environmental RSO S.E.N.S.E. (Students Embracing Nature, Sustainability and the Environment) and the Sustainability Office. Students can make a small outdoor cedar compost bin for your home, learn about other styles of compost bins, and talk to experts. Materials are limited, first come first serve! The talk is open to the public, but you must be a student to take home a bin.

Description:

Title: Social-Ecological Dynamics in Residential Landscapes of the U.S., Implications for Urban Sustainability

Focusing on Phoenix, AZ and other cities across the U.S., this presentation will illuminate the complex social-ecological dynamics associated with land management in urban ecosystems. Research findings specifically reveal decision tradeoffs, counterintuitive relationships between residents’ values and choices, as well as legacy effects in decision making. Professor Larson will also discuss the motivations and constraints for land management, along with the implications for sustainability.

Rag Rug Workshop

The Student Center Craft Shop

Description:

How to Make a colorful Round Amish Knot Rag Rug! Work from recycled fabric. The workshop will get you started on the basic rag rug and all the knots. The class time will provide enough time to make a rag hop pad, but this could be turned into a rug outside of class time. Materials provided. Cost $6.00

All Species Earth Day Parade

Will you fly, crawl, wave in the wind or swim? Join the Beloved Puppetistas for Community Puppet making workshops and more! Workshop dates included April 5 (6-9pm Brews Brothers Tap Room), April 7 (10-2pm, Train Depot, Carbondale Main Street), and April 14 (10-2, Train Depot, Carbondale Main Street). The parade will gather at 11:00am and kick off at 11:30 am.

Jazz for Earth Night

Description:

The Sustainability Council will announce Green Fund awardees and the Chancellor will recognize those receiving the Environmental Ambassador’s Award. After the formal ceremony, there will be an interactive area with tables and displays.  Light refreshments provided.

45th Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta

Description:

The 45th Annual Great Cardboard Boat Regatta will take place Saturday April 28th on the Campus Lake at the Southern Illinois University. Registration will begin at 10:00 am and races will start at 1:00 pm.

Description:

Join the experienced Outdoor Pursuits staff for an evening of instruction and exploration! This free event gives students information about canoeing, rentals, and courses provided by SIU. S’mores and slacklining will also be provided. Participants must bring a valid SIU Student ID.

 

 

Earth Month 2017

At SIU, we like to celebrate the Earth year-round! However, April 22nd is Earth Day, April 28th is Arbor Day, and we treated the entire month of April as Earth Month! Since events occured campus wide and in the community, the Sustainability Office created a calendar to help you know what happened!
